Belarus - Vitebsk State Academy of Veterinary Medicine
The Vitebsk State Academy of Veterinary Medicine is one of the oldest higher schools and a leading educational establishment in Belarus training veterinary medicine surgeons and zooengineers. Until 1994, the Academy was known as the "Vitebsk Veterinary Institute."

History
- November, 4th, 1924 the resolution about opening of the Vitebsk Veterinary Institute was produced by Belorussian Government on the basis of Vitebsk Higher Agricultural College (founded in 1921), the Provincial Veterinary Zoological Museum, Veterinary Bacteriological Laboratory (founded in 1913). In the same year was named after the October Revolution.
- November 8th, 1924 Ceremonial opening of the Vitebsk Veterinary Institute.
- January 25th, 1934 the farm “Podberezje” was given to Institute as a teaching and training complex.
- January 8th, 1945, after World War 2 the lessons started again on all faculties and courses.
- 1959 — Correspondence Faculty was open for veterinary medicine and zooengineer courses.
- 1960 — Postgraduate school was open and the right to defend a thesis was obtained by * Institute.
- 1966 — Continual Professional Development Faculty (CPD) was open.
- 1970 — Preparation Department was open.
- March 3rd, 1994 — Vitebsk Veterinary Institute was renamed into Vitebsk State Academy of Veterinary Medicine.
- 2007 — International Business Council of Eurasian Economic Community has awarded VSAVM the Emblem of Honor "Leader of the National Economy-2007".[1]
Education
The veterinary medicine faculty trains veterinarians of general profile and also with specialization in: veterinary-sanitary expertise, gynecology and reproductive animal technologies, avian diseases, veterinary bacteriology and virology, swine diseases.
Zooengineering faculty trains zooengineers of general profile with specializations: livestock breeding and poultry production.
The course of studies at the veterinary medicine faculty is 5 years, at the zooengineering faculty it takes 4 years, 8 months.
Preparatory courses and pre-training department render assistance for those wishing to enter the Academy.
The academic process at the Academy is supported by 323 teachers including 7 academicians and corresponding members of the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences and a number of international academies, 23 Doctors of Sciences, professors and 137 PhD recipients.
The library of the Academy is computerized and well equipped with programmes, connected to BelAl, Academia, AGROS, AGRIS. The database also contains the works of the researchers of the Academy, journals and magazines as well as the electronic catalogue. Departments of the Academy are equipped with teaching and learner’s testing computers programmes.
The Academy houses a library with more than 1.2 million volumes of educational and research editions and some museums: anatomy, pathanatomy, parasitology, zoology etc. Their functions the Research Consultancy and Diagnostic Centre where investigations on clinical biochemistry, animal immune pathology, parasitocenology, environmental pharmacology as well as preventive maintenance and treatment of infectious diseases in young stock of farm and small animals are carried out.

Students reside in convenient student's hostels. Accommodation fee costs 15$ monthly.
Students are accommodated in convenient dormitories, 2 persons per room. Block system in dormitories includes 2 rooms in a block with toilet and bathroom.
Date of commencement: beginning of September. Class size: 12-13 students. Admission requirements: Fluent Russian is required. Entrance exams are held in Belarusan or Russian. Tuition is in Russian Student profile: National/Overseas Students: 100/1. Men/Women: 2/1. 17 - 26 years old.
Recreation activities are supported in a Student's Club, student's cafe as well as in culture centers in the town.
Students are provided with a lot of opportunities for recreational and arts activities: brass band, dancing groups, instrumental vocal groups, discos, parties, theatre perfomances, concerts, folklore performances, festivals, etc.
There are 3 gyms in the Academy, 18 sports disciplines including athletics, volleyball, football, tennis, wrestling etc.
Students are offered a wide variety of sports activities: athletics, boxing, classical wrestling, weight lifting, martial arts, basketball, volleyball, table-tennis, football, skiing, equestrian sports
Research
At different periods a number of outstanding scientists were lecturing and performing scientific investigations here. Among them are: S.W.Vychelessky (episotiology) and H.S. Goreglad (veterinary sanitary expertise). Such professors as: P.S.Ivanova, A.N.Makarevsky, P.V. Kaimakov, F.F.Perekhov, V.Y. Velfferts, F. Y. Berenstein, V.F.Petrov, V.F.Lemash. Y.G.Gubarevich and many others. The first Rector of the Academy was professor E.F.Alanov (1924-1928). For a long period the institute was headed by professor V.F.Lemesh, then by professor and academic of the International Academy of Higher Schools M.S.Zhakov (1968-1995).
Upon graduation there is a possibility for graduates to continue their carrier taking a post- graduate course like MSc or PhD. There is also the Continuing of Professional Development Faculty.
Students carry out researches on various actual problems in veterinary, zooengineering, biology and economy of agricultural production.
Students carry out research work on the most urgent affairs in veterinary medicine, zooengineering, biology and agricultural production. Academy departments are well equipped to perform academic and research activities properly. At the Academy there are 24 research laboratories attached to the departments and a Central Research Laboratory.
Scientific research programmes deal with etiology, photogenesis, development of methods for prognosing, diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of communicable and non-communicable animal diseases. They also deal with the improvement of breeding and productive qualities of cattle, hogs and poultry, as well as scientifically grounded use of feeding supplements.
Fundamentally applied investigations deal with conformity to natural laws of the immune status formation in organisms, with the discovering of mechanisms of immunopathology developing in animals, with the development of new preparations for diagnostic treatment and prophylactic purposes, with the creation of a system of measurement to ensure the stable well being of animal husbandry in Belarus, freedom from technogenous factors and communicable diseases as well as the improvement of breeding and productive qualities of animals.
The Academy is involved in the activities of the International Association for Animal Defense and International Veterinary Association. On a long term basis the Academy cooperates with some 30 scientific centers and universities around the world.
Clinical
Their first clinical steps future veterinarians make in practice classes at 6 animal clinics, where 1500 ailing animals are registered as in- and about 700-900 as out- patients annually.
Knowledge is put into practice in clinics, veterinary stations and laboratories, breeding farms of the Republic of Belarus and in 12 countries abroad such as Poland, Germany, England, USA, Canada, Sweden, etc.
