Hormonal Pyometra
CYSTIC ENDOMETRIAL HYPERPLASIA- hormonal pyometra
There is pus accumulation in the uterus as a sequel to hormonal disturbance with or without bacterial complication (E. coli, Staph. aureus, Strep sp.). In the bitch tends to occur in older animals, usually >3 years old which have not-bred and are usually in post-oestrus luteal phase (occasionally granulosa cell tumour). It is less common in cats (they tend to be spayed early) but congenital mucometra can occur.
Aetiology
Elevated progesterone with oestrogen priming leads to cystic endometrial hyperplasia and mucoid secretion. Secondary bacterial infection leads to 'Pyometra'. The cervix may be closed or open with increased severity of clinical signs if cervix is closed.
Inert Table of hormonal pyometra
Sequelae of Type III pyometra
- recovery and regression to Type II.
- toxaemia/septicaemia - death.
- persistence as Type IV chronic form.
Extra-genital lesions
- Membrano-proliferative glomerulonephritis (immune complex deposition).
- Leukocytosis.
- Extra-medullary leukocyte production (liver, spleen, LN, adrenals).
