Whilst editing we have some guidelines that must be taken into account.

Editorial Policies

Subject Matter

The WikiVet is a veterinary encyclopedia designed to primarily support further learning into the veterinary sciences. As such the content of the wiki is strictly veterinary related. Whilst the many creators and editors of the site have done their best to ensure accuracy it is likely that there will be many sections that need extendeding or further editing. The wiki is therefore very much a "work in progress" and we invite all users of the site to take ownership by adding to the existing material.

We are also aware that at present WikiVet does not provide a comprehensive cover of the entire veterinary curriculum. The reader will notice that there are many blind ending or "stubs" and empty pages. With your help, we intend to fill out these remaining sections in the coming years. We also welcome suggestions from you about additional features, tools or content that you would like to see added to the wiki.

Neutral Point of View

The WikiVet needs to provide a balanced view on any contentious topics. It therefore should present all relevant viewpoints and to be informative on issues of debate rather than persuasive. In articles we will accept all opinions on a topic but unless they are generally accepted in the veterinary community as fact please try to use phrases such as 'In Report X it was noted that...' or 'in textbook X it states that'.

The neutral point of view is highly relevant when discussing treatment of disease. It must be remembered that every case is unique and there are differing ways to treat each disease. But as this is a site on the whole dedicated to veterinary students please just discuss the current accepted treatment for the disease.

Citing Sources

It is very important to cite the source of the imformation that you contribute to an article. They should be included at the bottom of the article in a section called 'References'. Without referencing your work it will make the validity of your comments dubious and also greatly increase the Wiki Reviewers work. For references please use this citation template.

Copyrights

Please ensure that you don't include copyrighted material without permission. This statement is valid for both text and images and is very important to uphold. If you notice any breaches of copyright please let the wikiadmin know and we shall endeavour to correct the problem.

English Dialects

The WikiVet was founded by a collaboration of British Veterinary schools and as such UK English is the accepted language of WikiVet. So 'edema' would not be accepted whilst 'oedema' would. This also means that mainly diseases endemic to the UK and drugs licensed in the UK will be discussed. If exotic diseases are discussed please mention where the disease is endemic.

Etiquette

It must always be remembered that this site has been created to aid in the education of student members of the veterinary profession. Due to the nature of the site being a Wiki everyone has the right to edit. The result is that we must have good faith in all the contributers to the site. It has therefore been decided by the Wiki Editorial group to restrict access to veterinary students, practicising veterinary surgeons, qualified nurses and veterinary academics teaching at recognised veterinary schools or unviversities.

The veterinary world is a close knit community and teaching others is an integral part of this community. People come to the site to aid their learning process and as such we hope that all users will respect this commitment to education. Any abuse or defamation of the site is a highly selfish act and hinders the learning of veterinary students world-wide. Such individuals will be banned from editing the site. If you suspect any abuse of a page please let the wiki admin know by emailing us at admin and we shall try and sort out the problem as soon as possible.
