- Horse - faeces, digesta, sand, or fibrous material can all contribute.
- There are certain predisposing factors:
- Poor dentition
- Water deprivation
- A high roughage diet
- General debility.

- Antihelminthic administration or large parasite burdens can also lead to impaction.
