Introduction

“ONIRIS is a higher education establishment under the jurisdiction of the French Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. It is deeply rooted in its surrounding area, with a European outlook and is involved in a wide range of issues including animal health and public health, clinical and biomedical fields, health biotechnologies, food science and processing technology. ONIRIS aims at taking an active part in the domains of nutrition, human and animal health, while making its contribution to the concept of “One medicine, one health”. History

The fourth National Veterinary School in France was created in 1979 to train more vets in the country. Oniris - Nantes-Atlantic National College of Veterinary Medicine, Food Science and Engineering, was the result of its fusion with the National School of Agri-Food Engineering of Nantes in 2010. Thus, veterinary students can interact with engineering students in food science/nutrition or health biotechnologies, which is unique in France.

Education

Oniris provides a 5-year course with three years of theoretical education and the last two years at the teaching hospital. The fourth „all clinical“ year is entirely devoted to clinical activities in farm animals, horses and small animals, and the fifth year is dedicated to one path (farm animals, horses or small animals) to get deeper training and get prepared to professional activity. Oniris offers that you get more skills and knowledge by following one of the three internship program it offers: small animal clinics, equine medicine or large animal clinics. An internship is a full-time annual program aiming to get operational skills in medicine and surgery. Each of the four French Vet Schools offers an internship programme in small animal clinics. The recruitment is common to the four Veterinary Schools in the form of a national competitive examination. Other post-graduates courses are provided such a: Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Studies (Small animal internal medicine - Health and quality management in dairy production - Health and quality management in swine production - Health and quality management in poultry and rabbit production) and Diploma in Specialized Veterinary Studies (Veterinary pathology – Dermatology - Small animal internal medicine - Equine reproduction) You can also become a resident as Oniris is registered as training centre for many European College Residencies: – European College of Animal Reproduction – European College of Veterinary Pathologists – European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition – European College of Equine Internal Medicine – European College of Veterinary Dermatology – European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine - Companion Animals – European College of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology … Oniris provides also Master Degrees, such as the MAN-IMAL program, an international higher education degree program exclusively founded on the “One World, One Health” initiative, (entirely taught in English), as well as PhD, with around 75 candidates. Oniris is the only vet school in France accredited for Doctoral Degrees.

Research

Research is an important field in Oniris, with almost two hundred publications a year in international scientific journals. Four main areas are focused by Oniris’ research teams: • Human Health, Biomedical Research and Animal Models • Health Control of Animal Husbandry • Food Quality and Safety • Food Processing, management, and Sustainability

Fourteen Research Units are currently working on these various issues, for instance: the pathogenesis of human diseases and the evaluation of therapeutic strategies, especially cellular and genetic using animal models, the biology of pathogenic agents in Livestock, animal disease epidemiology, biological and chemical contaminations of food during industrial processing, and chemical contaminations of the environment related to animal husbandry system (ie drugs).
