About the University of Lublin

Lublin is situated in the centre of the agricultural region of Poland. This localization enables an easy reach of patients and other biological materials, necessary for an adequate organization of the didactic process. Moreover, the localization of the Faculty within the city is an advantage for students and has allowed good integration and better organization of the didactic process. The main authority of the University is Rector and 3 Vice-rectors elected every 4 years.

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

The Dean is the head of the Faculty directing all the scientific and didactic activities together with two Vice-deans responsible for student affairs and education as well as clinical affairs, respectively. Four advisory faculty Committees (for the development of academic teachers, for scientific research, for curriculum as well as for teaching quality) help the Dean in undertaking important decisions. These decisions are approved by the Faculty Council consisting of all the professors and representatives of every group of employees.

About Us

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lublin was established in 1944 as one of the faculties belonging to University of Maria Skłodowska-Curie. It was located within the university campus together with other faculties, the main library, cultural centre and student houses. In the meantime, the structure of faculty was reorganized and finally, in 1995, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine became one of the Faculties at the Agricultural University in Lublin which lately was renamed to University of Life Sciences. At present Faculty in Lublin is one of 4 Faculties of Veterinary Medicine in Poland.

Other informations

Our Faculty publishes professional veterinary journal Medycyna Weterynaryjna which is official organ of Polish Society for Veterinary Sciences.
Our Faculty has established wide cooperation with veterinary faculties (formally signed agreements) in Košice, Turin, Pisa, Lyon.
In the last years the mutual cooperation agreements within the frame of Erasmus Programme have been signed with veterinary faculties in Vienna, Hannover, Pisa, Uppsala.

Education

Undergraduate

High School Diploma (Matura) certificate allows for admission to enroll for the 1st year of studies of veterinary medicine in Lublin. Biology and chemistry should be chosen as additional subjects for exam. Faculty Admittance Commission is responsible for the procedure and the selection of candidates. Applicants are ranked in accordance to Matura points. The number of candidates is established every year by Faculty Council and Rector and varies between 120 and 150.
The studies of veterinary medicine at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lublin last 5.5 years (11 semesters) and are one step studies leading to the diploma of veterinary surgeon. Curriculum is based on regulations of the Faculty Council and EU directive requirements related to Day one skills. Systematic teaching (lectures and classes) takes place in winter semester starting 1st Oct and lasting 15 weeks. During the first three weeks in February students take exams, there is also a short break between the terms. The summer semester lasting 15 weeks starts at the end of February. Again, three weeks in June are devoted to exams.
Students has 3 chances to take one exam. If they do not meet the requirements for the enrollment for the next year they are allowed to take the same year once again. Detailed procedures are described in the Regulations of studies.
Each graduate obtains the diploma signed by the Rector and Dean, with the seal of University of Life Sciences in Lublin. The graduates planning to work as veterinary surgeons have to register at the regional Veterinary Medicine Chamber. That organization authorizes the graduates for veterinary practice and grants professional licenses.

Postgraduate

Scientific career consists of several steps:

The degree of Doctor of Veterinary Sciences (equal to PhD) is conferred to a person who holds the degree of veterinary surgeon, performed experimental work, has passed doctoral examinations covering the scope defined by the board of the awarding organizational unit and has submitted and defended a doctoral thesis. It is obligatory for assistants employed at the Faculty to obtain the degree. Access to the procedure leading to the degree of Doctor habilitated – the highest scientific degree, is open to the person who holds the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Sciences, has significant academic achievements, performed experimental work as well as submitted and defended a dissertation. Doctor habilitated can apply for the position of professor of University of Life Sciences (equal to Prof. dr hab.). The highest academic title is the title of professor of a specific area of science. The title of professor is conferred by the President of the Republic of Poland. Person with the title of professor can be employed as the Prof. extraordinary (equal to title of associate professor) or Prof. ordinary (equal to title of full professor).

Postgraduate training at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Lublin covers 4 year doctoral studies ending with the defense exam of doctoral thesis and the title of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.

According to legal regulations the continuing education in any of the 17 professional veterinary specializations can be conducted by Veterinary Faculties in Poland. It is realized in the form of short, 2-day courses held from 2 to 5 times per semester. The duration of such study depends on the kind of specialization and ranges from 4 to 6 semesters. After completion of the study and passing the exam in front of a commission appointed by the National Council, a veterinary surgeon obtains the national specialist competence. The Chairmen of the specializations in diseases of dog and cat, radiology, bee pathology as well as epizootiology and veterinary administration are from our Faculty.
