Glomerular Disease

The glomerulus acts as the filter of the kidney. Damage to the glomerulus leads to increased permeability and leakage of substances such as protein into the urine (proteinuria). Diseases that cause proteinuria are classified as protein losing nephropathies. If severe, these nephropathies can lead to nephrotic syndrome, a condition characterised by proteinuria, hypoalbuminaemia, hypercholesterolaemia and oedema. Details of the normal glomerular anatomy and physiology can be found at Glomerular Apparatus and Filtration page.
