Crotalus

Crotalus is a genus of snakes of the subfamily Crotalinae, family Viperidae and it includes most of the rattlesnakes. There are 26 species and they range from Canada to Argentina. They have a pit hollowing out the maxillary bone, opening between the eye and the nostril. They are named for the jointed rattle at the tip of their tail.
