The FV&AS was established At the time of establishment in 2006, FV&AS offered five years Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree program and M.Phil & Ph.D degree in Poultry Science.in 2006 under HEC funded project of Rs.468 millions.The FV&AS is accredited by the Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council (PVMC) Pakistan in 2012
Education
The faculty offers various courses in different disciplines of veterinary & animal science and to conduct research on all aspects of production and veterinary sciences particularly associated with the arid regions of the Punjab. The faculty is comprised of five departments viz., Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences (comprising Sections of Anatomy and Histology, Physiology, Pharmacology),Department of Pathobiology (Microbiology , Parasitology , Pathology), Department of Clinical Studies (Medicine, Surgery and Radiology, Theriogenology), Department of Poultry Science, Department of Livestock Production and Management (Livestock Management, Animal Nutrition, Animal Breeding & Genetics) were established at FV&AS.FV&AS offered five years Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree program and M.Phil & Ph.D degree in Poultry Science. In near future the FV&AS is going to start post-graduate degree programs in various disciplines of Veterinary and Animal Sciences
Current Research
The state of the art equipments are installed in the laboratories of different departments. In addition to all facilities, FV&AS have signed number of MoUs with national and international organizations incl Our well qualified faculty members are training the future scientists and creating new knowledge for the uplift and welfare of the society. The FV&AS is accredited by the Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council (PVMC) Pakistan in 2012. This program continues to excel in providing educational, research and training opportunities to future veterinarians and animal scientists. The qualified individuals will lead future efforts in public health, animal production, disease control, veterinary care, food safety, biotechnology, higher education, and research.uding, NRSP, ILRI, Dairy and Rural Development Foundation.
Clinical Services
The faculty has one on campus Pet Clinic/Veterinary Animal Teaching Hospital. Of course, the FV&AS Pet’s Clinic is probably best known in the twin cities (Islamabad, Rawalpindi) and gaining popularity as indicated by increase in the number of daily outdoor cases. One large animals Veterinary Hospital and a small Livestock Farm is located at Rawat (20 kilometer away from the main campus). The on campus operation theatre and X-ray facilities are also available.
Department of Livestock Production & Management
Livestock and poultry raising in Pakistan are one of the biggest industries and an integral part of the rural economy contributing significantly to the agriculture and the national GDP. The various types of livestock existing in the country provide farm supplies with food, draught power, fuel and fertilizer. These animals also provide regular income and employment, particularly for small farmers and landless labourers. Without livestock it would not have been possible to profitably utilize the crop residues, stubbles, roadside and scattered vegetation on rangelands including hilly and sub-hilly areas in the country. Keeping in mind the marvelous role of livestock in the economy of the country, the Department of Animal Sciences was established in 1993 at University of Arid Agriculture (now Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi), to offer introductory courses to B.Sc.(Hons.) Agriculture students with sole objective of familiarizing agriculture graduates with livestock and poultry farming. Later on, in collaboration with Poultry Research Institute, Rawalpindi, a postgraduate degree program in Poultry Husbandry was initiated during year 2001-02. However, in line with the establishment of Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in September 2006, the Department of Livestock Production and Management was also established with the following objectives.
To provide students with basic and applied knowledge for a strong foundation in livestock production sciences that emphasizes the application of fundamental principles of animal farm management, feeds & feeding and breeding & genetics in the areas of animal production.
To fulfill the educational needs of students by educating them on issues facing livestock farming and to provide students with skills to be competent and enter into the practical life well prepared with hand on knowledge and expertise in the following areas: Livestock farming including farm feasibilities, designing, management and animal care Animal feed formulation ability Animal feedstuffs procurement and skills in feed milling technologies Animal breeding and mating planning skills Ability to plan and execute independent research in animal production sciences Teamwork experience with excellent oral, written and multimedia communication skills
To provide students with knowledge relevant to animal farming practices that includes awareness in areas of animal welfare and ethical aspects related to care and use of animals in research, the role and impact of livestock farming on the society and environment. Department Goal and Mission The overall goal of the department is to produce trained manpower and to assist in poverty alleviation through motivation for creation of opportunities for generating and increasing income within the micro-, small-, medium- and large-scale livestock farming. Furthermore, the department will also contribute towards food security with the slogan "more milk, meat and eggs". Mission Statement build concepts of the subject through high quality class teaching, work in the laboratory and at livestock farms and to train individuals in the field of modern livestock production and technology. Future Plans and Areas of Expansion: Post-graduate degree program in Animal Nutrition, Livestock Management and Animal Breeding and Genetics will be started. To start problem oriented research on specific and serious problems in the animal production industry. Establishment of livestock research farms. To devise the newer strategies for the mitigation of methane emission from livestock for enhancing animal productivity and minimizing the contribution to global warming. Research to discover novel ways of incorporating enhanced levels of essential nutrients such as selenium, folic acid, omega 3 fatty acids and iron into dairy and poultry foods. Department of Poultry Science
The department of poultry was established in 2006 in Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences. Department is offering the M. Phil. and PhD Poultry Science and undergraduate courses for DVM and B.Sc. (Hons) Agriculture. The department is actively imparting teaching and research at postgraduate levels and both fields are addressed at greater detailed. We focus on problems of practical importance faced by poultry industry Department Mission The Poultry Science Department is responsible for the production of trained and skilled resource persons for poultry industry and research institutes. The surveillance of different poultry diseases in arid areas, study of different stages of avian embryo in hatchery and production of high yielder poultry breeds through genetic selection and transgenic technology are other prime missions of the department. The Poultry Science Department is also committed to the education of graduate students in the Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences. Future Planning and Area of Expansion In the near future department with collaboration of Poultry Research Institute Rawalpindi will introduce the new high yielder poultry breed for more eggs and meat and we are trying to introduce the new alternate poultry feed ingredient for poultry industry.

Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences
The department of Veterinary Basic Science was established in 2006. This department comprises of three basic Veterinary Science fields (Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Histology, Veterinary Physiology & Veterinary Pharmacology). Our department is making instructional efforts in teaching the basic know how of Veterinary Science as well as research. It is providing necessary knowledge of the normal animal body functions and basic concepts regarding the pharmacology of drugs in veterinary practice to the students pursuing basic degree in veterinary science. The research activities have been focused on problems of practical importance such as problems related to molting of spent birds, hormonal profile of chicken under different environmental and stress conditions, endocrine disruptor chemical studies and chemical toxicity studies. Department MissionThe mission of Veterinary Basic Science Department is to advance the understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology of animal through fundamental and applied research, education, and services. We provide opportunities for outstanding learning, world-class research, and active engagement with the community, in order to improve animal health. Faculty members and students will advance understanding of, and make a positive impact on a broad range of health challenges.
Our department comprises of anatomists, physiologists, and pharmacists. We apply our knowledge to study animal movement, structure and function throughout the life cycle, in health and disease, in benign and extreme environments, at work, at home, at sports and at play.
Our educational goals are to impart a sound knowledge, understanding of basic phenomenon and to promote critical thinking, problem solving, and research skills appropriate to the field through our continuing study programs. Future Planning & Areas of Expansion The Department of Veterinary Basic Science is working to find out / identify endocrine disruptive chemicals those effect public as well as animal health. Our basic focus is on chemical toxicity especially pesticides and chemicals used in plastic industry. Also we are working to find out the effect of these chemicals (disruptors) on DNA damage. Another area of interest in our department is to find out some excellent ways to induce molting in spent layers and to increase the egg production of laying hens.
Department of Patho-Biology
The department of Pathobiology was founded in 2007. The department is having three major sections i.e., Veterinary Microbiology, Veterinary Pathology and Veterinary Parasitology. The department is imparting skills and technical knowledge to undergraduate and postgraduate students of animal sciences with its full vigor and devotion through accurate disease diagnosis, research-based quality education to meet the future challenges. The areas of Pathobiology are highly dynamic that encompass philosophical approaches to understand disease phenomena produced as a result of microorganisms (Virus, Bacteria, Fungi), parasites, plant/animal toxins, drugs/chemicals toxicity. Overall, Department of pathobiology is playing a spectacular role in sustainable livestock and poultry production thus sharing to strengthen the country economy and wildlife conservation. Department of Clinical Studies
The Department of Clinical Studies is one of the 5 constituents in the Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, PMAS-Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi. The Department of Clinical Studies in conjunction with other departments trains the undergraduate students in various disciplines of veterinary science. The department offers courses in the disciplines of: veterinary medicine, surgery, radiology, and theriogenology. Department also has facility to house the experimental animals for imparting practical training to the students. The theriogenology work is undertaken at Sihala Slaughter house and at the designated veterinary hospitals owned by the Livestock department of Government of the Punjab.
