This class of drugs works on the proximal portion of the [[Distal Tubule - Anatomy & Physiology|distal convoluted tubule]] and inhibits the sodium chloride co-transporter in the apical membrane. As a result they increase the potassium loss - see picture. They are less effective than loop diuretics but are better tolerated.
