Xenodontine dentition occurs in several genera of the subfamily Xenodontinae, family Colubridae. They have an unusual arrangement of the skull where when the mouth is opened the upper jaw swings forward into a vertical position exposing the rear fangs. Species are generally toad eating and include hognose snakes (Heterodon spp.) from North America and Lystrophis, Waglerophis and Xenodon spp. from South America.
