It is a School within the Vast and Prestigious University Of Zambia Main Campus. Entry into the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is through selection from School of Natural Sciences. Exemption are however made for Diploma holders of Animal Health and Related Disciplines. Information on Eligibility and be obtained from the university main page. About Us
Since its inception in July 1983, the school has been addressing the critical shortage of qualified veterinary personnel in the country. The first class of 14 students was admitted in October 1983. With the co-operation of the Government of Japan, the construction of a large and well equipped School began in February 1984 and was completed in 1986. The School has since started a post-graduate programme for a Masters degree (M.Vet. Med.) to be taken in two years, the first year is course work and the second year is research followed by presentation of a dissertation. The development of the masters programme and the undergraduate curriculum are currently under review.
The School library is rapidly expanding and already has a museum, computerised literature search facilities, and an audio-visual laboratory. The School library has also established links with other international libraries including the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) library in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia, to facilitate improved literature search and document delivery facilities.
The programme of study extends over 6 years and leads to the award of the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Zambia.

Department Of Clinical Studies
The University of Zambia School of Veterinary Medicine, Large and Small Animal Clinic was established in 1986 as a clinical component of the University of Zambia School of Veterinary Medicine. Its teaching facilities include the Hospital for Large and Small Animals which provides consultation, referral and 24-hour emergency veterinary services, and care for domestic animals such as horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and domestic pets, fowls and wildlife.
Veterinary Services
The Large and Small Animal Clinic offers medical and surgical care for horses and farm animals in Lusaka and surrounding areas. Our facility includes sophisticated diagnostic imaging capability, modern surgical suites, intensive care programs, reproduction, herd health and production medicine, all of which are important in the diagnosis and treatment of difficult and complex diseases in your animals. Our veterinarians are often specialists in their fields. The well-being of your animal is our top priority.
Appointments
Appointments can be arranged through our reception desk (01) 291515, or 291777 extension 3086/3064. When calling, please ask to be connected to a Large Animal clinician or a Small Animal Clinician. It is recommended that you bring your animal's records from your referring veterinarian. Our appointment hours are normally 09:00 hrs to 17:00 hrs, Monday through Friday and 09:00hrs to 12:00hrs Saturday and Sunday. Horses that are arriving via public trucking agents may be dropped off at the hospital the night before the appointment, if scheduled accordingly.
The Medical Team
A dedicated team of people will be working with you and your animal during your visit with us. The team is composed of faculty members, who are trained in various specialties; residents, who are graduate veterinarians undergoing additional training in a particular specialty; veterinary students, who work under the direct supervision of our faculty; veterinary technicians, who perform tests and help with treatments; and our animal care attendants, who keep the animals' environment clean and provide feed.
Educational Mission
In one special way, we are different from a private hospital; we are a teaching hospital. Our sixth-year students learn all aspects of animal care by participating in the diagnosis and treatment of your animal during the final year of their education. Having gone through five years of University rigorous education they are dedicated individuals. Though the students are involved in the cases presented to our hospital, the responsibility of your animal's care rests with the attending veterinarian. The students are closely directed and supervised by faculty, residents, and technicians. Your patience and cooperation are greatly appreciated. You play an important role in our educational process.
Clinic Visit
Because of the educational aspect of our hospital and the complexity of many of the problems we see at the clinic, we emphasize thoroughness in evaluating each animal presented to us. Physical examinations, client interviews, and performance of various tests will generally take a little longer than a normal veterinary visit. During this time we will try to identify the problems that your animal is having and discuss the treatment options with you.
Hospitalization
After examination, one of the treatment options may involve hospitalization. We have 24-hour staffing, including technicians and fourth-year students, to provide the best in medical care. Faculty and residents are on call if needed. During your animal's hospitalization, one of the veterinarians will call you daily with a progress report. If you would like to speak to the doctor before they have had an opportunity to call you, please call our reception desk on 01-291515. If the veterinarian is unable to come to the phone, the receptionist will leave a message and your call will be returned. If the animal's condition changes during the admission, the veterinarian in charge will contact you immediately. Some owners wish to visit their animals while they are hospitalized. Please arrange visiting hours with the appointment desk so that the attending veterinarian can be there to answer questions concerning your animal.
Discharge
Comprehensive treatment instructions will be sent home with your animal at discharge. If the animal has been transported by a service, the instructions may also be mailed, e-mailed or faxed to you. UNZA-VET CLINICS The UNZA-Vet clinics in the department of Clinical Studies provide an opportunity to veterinary students for a unique practical clinical experience in a well-established animal hospital. he clinics comprise of a Small Animal Clinic (mainly for pets) and a Large Animal Clinic (for farm animals and horses).
The clinics provide a consultancy, diagnostic and referral service to the public and private practitioners. They are equipped to carry out radiography, ultrasonography, equine and canine endoscopy, blood screening and analysis, many different kinds of surgery including dental, eye and orthopaedic surgery, and vaccinations.
For the game ranchers, farmers and those unable to bring their animals to the clinic, farm visits and house calls can be arranged.
Boarding facilities for pets and farm animals are available as well.
