Introduction

Forage mites are found in livestock bedding and stored foods. They produce disease by inoculating or depositing irritant substances on the skin. Outbreaks of infection have occurred at The Donkey Sanctuary following use of certain batches of straw.

Clinical Signs

  • Irritation usually occurs in the lower limbs and is treated using pour-on preparations

Diagnosis

The same as that for the horse.

Treatment

  • Application of topical pyrethrins has proved effective. All affected straw should be burned.
