The Colubridae are a complex group and tend to come in all shapes, sizes and colours. All lack a pelvic girdle, a functional left lung and a coronoid bone. There are nine subfamilies:

  • Colubrinae
  • Homalopsinae
  • Xenoderminae
  • Calamariinae
  • Pareatinae
  • Lamprophinae
  • Pseudoxenodontinae
  • Natricinae
  • Xenodontinae
  • Psammophinae
