  • Several causes
    1. Foreign body/ impaction, e.g.
      • Stones
      • Hair/wool balls (trichobezoars)
      • Coarse feed in herbivores.
    2. Neurologic causes, e.g.
      • Dysautonomia (cat, horse)
      • End-stage liver disease (horse)
      • Vagal indigestion (cattle)
    3. Pyloric stenosis
      • Seen in the dog, foal, and sometimes in the cat
      • Congenital hypertrophy of the pyloric muscle causes delayed gastric emptying and persistent vomiting.
      • Can be acquired in the foal following healed ulcers.
