Introduction

Also referred to as the reticuloendothelial system or mononuclear phagocytic system. It is compromised of primary and secondary lymphoid systems that are composed of lymphoid tissues that both mature and proliferate lymphocytes.

Primary lymphoid tissues

  • Bone marrow
  • Thymus
  • Bursa of Fabricius
  • Foetal Liver

Secondary lymphoid tissues

  • Lymph nodes
  • Spleen
  • Mucosal Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT)
    • Appendix/caecal pouch
    • Ileal Peyer's Patch
    • Tonsils

Function

  • Removal of senescent cells
  • Production of immune cells

Lymphocytes

  • T Cell Differentiation and Function
  • B Cell Differentiation and Function
  • T Cell Independent and T Cell Dependent Responses
  • Immunoglobulin Class Switching
  • Major Histocompatability Complex (MHC) molecule

Lymphatic Circulation

  • Lymphatic Vessels
