The scheme is intended to increase the knowledge and professionalism of people handling veterinary medicines. SQPs are trained to know when an animal needs to be referred to a veterinary surgeon before receiving any medication. Medication can be prescribed by an SQP and given to an owner by a competent person who must advise them on the safe use of that medication, go through the contra-indications and assess that the owner is competent and intending to use the medication for its authorised use.
