The purpose of introducing SQPs is to increase the knowledge and professionalism of personel handling veterinary medicines. The training of a SQP includes identifying when an animal needs to be referred to a veterinary surgeon before receiving any medication. Medication can be prescribed by an SQP and given to an owner by another competent person who must advise them on the safe use of that medication, go through the contra-indications and assess that the owner is competent and intending to use the medication for its authorised use.
