Bacillus piliformis is a species of Bacillus bacteria. It is a spore-forming filamentous Gram negative intracellular pathogen. The colonies only grow in tissue culture or embryonated eggs. The disease it causes is called Tyzzer's disease characterised by severe hepatic necrosis. It occurs sporadically in foals, calves, dogs and cats. It has an ncubation period up to 1 week.
Diagnosis can be achieved by Warthin-Starry silver impregnation technique demonstrating organisms in hepatocytes.
